A Mother's Day to remember...
Well...there are a million fun things that I have gotten behind on posting, and my plan was to catch up last Sunday and post all kinds of great stuff from the last month. Will went to a friend's birthday party, Mom came to visit, Todd's 100 mile bike ride, Jess came to visit, and most importantly, Will's birthday and birthday party. And I do promise to get all of that posted. However, remember the "oh, I'll get caught up Sunday night" comment? Yeah, apparently the universe had other plans for us.
Sunday morning Will was playing in the TV room while we were waiting around to take Jess to the airport. He had taken the drawers out of the TV stand and was using them to play with on the floor. He was climbing in and out of them like he has done a hundred times before when...he tripped. And fell. Apparently in the completely wrong position.
Here's the infamous box...looks harmless enough, right?
I scooped him up and was trying to figure out what exactly had happened. My gut told me that he broke his leg, but I was trying to talk myself out of it. Yes, he was upset, but we could get him calmed down if we held him still. Then you moved and he cried again. This went on for about an hour until it was time to take my sister to the airport. When we put him in the car, he was great -- talking, playing, no big deal. So we decided to take Jess to the airport, but would take him in to urgent care when we got back and they were open. As soon as we lifted him out of the car, he screamed again. Urgent care told us they couldn't do xrays, so they sent us to the ER. And the fun really got started...
Long story short (or at least shorter) we discovered at the ER that he had fractured his femur. We were sent to Texas Children's where we ended up spending the night on the ortho floor after Will was taken to the OR (at 2 you also get anesthesia so they can set your leg...good times!) around midnight. When you are two you can't have pins in your leg, so Will is now sporting a very stylish John Deere green spica cast for the next 4-6 weeks. Luckily he was asleep when they took him to the OR and fell right back to sleep afterwards, so I think he missed all the middle of the night excitement.
My little man posing for an early morning pic the next morning while we waited to be released from the hospital.
Some of the popular questions right now...
Can he ride in a car seat?
No, because he can't sit up. They gave us a harness that resembles what you would wear to jump out of an airplane that hooks into the car so he can lay flat in the back seat.
I think the sunglasses really add to the ensemble, don't you?
How do you change his diaper?
Only one hip is covered up, so you can wrap the diaper on one side and sort of push it through to keep it in place on the other side. Then you have to put a second diaper on over the top to make sure everything stays in place. They were using these huge cover up over the top at the hospital, but we've found that pull-ups that are a size larger actually work better.
Can he stand up?
He can if he is supported. Right now he hasn't figured out how to hold up all the weight of the cast -- it's about 5 lbs. But he's already tried to walk and crawl, scoot, etc so I don't think it will be long before he finds a way. In fact, as I was finishing this post, he has figured out how to crawl today. Videos will follow. :)
How's he doing?
He's actually great. We have the best babysitter in the world and she was dying to get a hold of him and take care of him so we could go back to work. Every day is an adventure as he (and we) find new ways to do things. In a lot of ways it is like having an infant again, he's just very verbal with his demands now. :) We go back to the ortho doctor next week, so hopefully we'll get a better idea of a timeline then.
Still a cheeseball for a picture -- my friend calls him the little cucumber. :)
Thank you SO much to those of you who have called, sent gifts, and come over to visit. We love you all so much and are very thankful to have such great people in our lives. We'll try and keep everyone posted via the blog and facebook as much as possible throughout this new adventure.

Man you sure have a little trooper there! I saw him crawling on FB, nothing keeps him down :) We're thinking of you guys and crossing our fingers for a quick healing. This will make a great story one day, I'm sure you heard how Jeremy got the top of his pinky cut off when he was 4. Boys have much better stories than we do :)
